Politicians Pretending to be Politicians

(Note: Okay. I tried to think of a great idea for my first post, one that would set up the basic theme and really get things going in a particular direction, and I came up with nothing. So I’m going with this one instead.)

At first, like most everyone else, I was appalled by all the celebrities who were getting involved with politics, but I took it light-heartedly, like most everyone else. However, now I’m getting sick of people (including celebrities) who are appalled by all the celebrities who get involved with politics.

It’s true that the majority of these celebrities don’t know shit about politics, but when will we learn that most politicians don’t know shit, either – and, more importantly, when will we hold them accountable. And I don’t mean standing up and saying: “I disagree.” God knows, there’s plenty of disagreement in the realm of politics. What I mean is, when will we finally reject all of them as unqualified for the job. Sure, they know how to give speeches that get people to vote for them, but what do they really know about running a government? If they were running a business, and that business was in the same state the country is in, the business would either go bankrupt or shareholders would find someone who could actually do the job. Really, such an analogy is giving them too much credit, since most of them would never get the job in the first place.

Don’t get ahead of me now, I’m not saying or implying I have any solutions. That’s just not how it works in a (theoretically) free country, where no single individual has power over the system as a whole. And don’t forget that solving a problem doesn’t start with a solution, anyway; it starts with realizing there is a problem. Also, if you consider the fact we voted these politicians into office, then seeing how screwed we are could still be a long way off. (Yeah, if I had thought of that last insight before I started writing, this would be a very different post.)

I’m not an expert on political history, but at some point (I’d guess somewhere around Lincoln) the politician manufacturers started making fake politicians and they managed to take the place of the real thing. Don’t believe me? Just look back at the founding fathers, appreciate all they accomplished, then look around you and ask yourself if George Bush, Bill Clinton, Barrack Obama or John McCain even deserve to share the same country with giants like Thomas Jefferson, George Washington, or John Adams. These idiots today don’t even know the difference between a (direct) democracy and a (constitutional) republic!

Well, that’s what irks me the most. That nobody seems to see that everyone is fake, not just celebrities, in the world of politics. That’s the one key thing we all forget when we are blasting these celebrities. It makes politicians look like the real thing by comparison. I think there’s a better comparison: modern politicians versus the founding fathers. If we hold modern politicians to the standards set by the founding fathers like we are holding celebrities to the standards of modern politicians, it will be so obvious they do not measure up that even celebrities will see it.
